This article highlights the meaning of playback speed, the step-by-step process on how to use it on TV, and how to control playback speed on Netflix.

What is Playback Speed?

The playback speed is a technique that helps you as a viewer to regulate (increase or decrease) the speed at which your movie plays while streaming.

How Playback Speed Works On Netflix

Netflix first attempted to develop and introduce the playback speed option in October 2019 but was hit with much criticism, which birthed an improved version of the Netflix Playback speed options.

How it works is that your movie or what you are about to watch comes with an original speed play (it is always in default), but the playlist speed feature on Netflix helps you increase or decrease the default play speed to suit your preference.

How To Control The Netflix Playback Speed on TV

1.  Understand The Netflix Environment

  • Check-in the Netflix website.
  • Download the Netflix app ( Skip this step if you have Netflix installed on your TV.
  • Launch the software on your device.
  • Log in to the site or app if you have already registered or register if you have no account registered.
  • Choose a Subscription plan (like Mobile, Basic, Standard, or Premium) and subscribe to your account.
  • Select a TV show of your choice, press the loading icon, and load it.

2.  Identify the Playback speed Icon

  • Go to the bottom part of the screen where the player control bar is located just at the bottom of your screen.
  • Tilt the control bar and make the playback speed icon on Netflix visible.
  • Navigate through to the icon that looks like a motor speedometer on the right corner of your TV.
  • Click the icon to see the playback speed options displayed. New sets of playback speed menu windows will come up.
  • Select your preferred playback speed option to slow down or increase the pace of your Netflix video.

Playback Speed Importance and Options on Netflix

Below are some of the importance of Playback speed on Netflix:

  • It gives viewers a choice to determine their preferred speed.
  • It also provides subscribers with vision impairments the opportunity to quicken the audio since some people can process audio faster than they can sight.
  • It also gives deaf users the chance to slow down the subtitles.

Netflix succeeded in introducing the playback speed option to its users to give them the avenue to either shorten or lengthen their stay while watching a particular piece of content.

This option means that you can extend a movie with the original 3:30 hours to 4:00 hours or something lesser than the original time frame, depending on your preference as a user.

The options we have to watch on playback speed range from 0.5, 0.75, 1.25 to 1.5 times their original speed, and this option is available for both those on regular streaming and offline downloads.

Other Things to Note About Netflix Playback Speed

  • This feature is available by default and does not require any form of adjustment in your internal Netflix profile setting to access it. In a situation whereby it is not available by default, note that Netflix may not have started providing such a service in your present location, and you can keep on checking.
  • Kindly note that this feature does not apply to your Netflix profile when you set it, but it applies only to each streaming session. As stated earlier, this implies that you have to keep on adjusting to your desired pace if you have already chosen a specific playback speed as your default speed.
  • The subtitles also automatically match the playback speed you select, such that you don’t lose on-screen text when you change the speed.
  • Finally, please note that this special feature is only available on smart TVs or TVs with web browsers that use HTML5 players (Hypertext Markup Language revision 5).
